A BIT ABOUT ME

I’m a journalist with an unending curiosity and it’s this passion that has driven me to unearth the human stories I have for the past decade. Having started writing at a young age, I sharpened this tool to focus on fashion, sustainability and abuses in conflict.

SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN CONFLICT

Sexual violence in conflict is an area I have produced numerous works on looking at cases in CAR, Burma, Bangladesh, Syria and the Balkans. The following feature report on Sexual violence includes an exclusive interview with the United Nations whistleblower Kathryn Bolkovac whose story the Rachel Weisz film; The Whistleblower is based on, International human rights lawyer Toby Cadman and Human Rights Watch researcher Hilary Margolis also appear.

ETHICAL FASHION

Following my first article for Hackney Citizen to the way I manage my wardrobe ethical fashion remains a key issue for me. In the wake of the deadly Rana Plaza collapse I produced a critically applauded two part programme as a part of a special series I was producing looking at issues in Bangladesh at the time. Bangladesh in Crisis: Ethical Fashion set a precedent and won plaudits internationally. The following year I produced an investigation looking further into the industry - Slave Industry a year on from Rana Plaza was shortlisted for the Association of International broadcasting (AIB) awards international television investigation of the year 2014 and an unprecedented event was held to screen the documentary in London

THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

With my team I travelled to the borders of the Central African Republic in 2014 where I documented the conflict and with testimonies from children, widows and widowers living in refugee camps along the Chadian borders after fleeing for their lives. Upon my return I produced a documentary, various articles and news reports continuing to document the conflict in the country. The following link takes you to a blog on why we should remember this forgotten conflict.

SYRIA

From watching the conflict rage from one form of loss to another as a news journalist I have seen the now long running conflict in Syria turn from protest to a bloody, unforgiving and heart-wrenching conflict. I have reported on numerous items related to the conflict including the rise of the Islamic state group, foreign fighters and government barrel bombings. The following is a special report from the end of 2014 following the rise of young British women leaving their homes in the UK to live in Islamic State held territory.

WAR ON TERROR

I have produced numerous reports and articles exploring, questioning and commenting on issues of identity, counter-terrorism and anti-islamic sentiment mostly within a British context.

LIFESTYLE / ECOLOGY

From fashion and beauty to sport, religion and climate change I continue to write and report on items impacting the world through culture or without war. I have produced longer form interviews with various notable individuals and filed news reports from London fashion week to features on the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and the Hajj pilgrimage as well as covering stories on rising water levels, deforestation and zoos.

MY RESEARCH...

As the popularity of the headscarf has grown exponentially, with it has emerged the 'modest fashion' phenomena. In my doctoral research I am exploring whether this is tied to religiosity, how it is impacting our understanding of the Islamic concept of hijab and what comes next.

I wrote my first piece for The New York Times on this.
